About Samuel – Bespoke Furniture Maker in Devon

I’m Samuel, a bespoke furniture maker and cabinet maker based in Devon, working from my workshop in Ottery St Mary and serving clients across Exeter and the wider county.

After a twelve-year career as a Paramedic with the NHS, I made the decision in 2021 to pursue a long-held ambition — to design and build furniture professionally. That decision marked the beginning of That Wood Furniture Guy and a commitment to craftsmanship as a full-time vocation.

My English and Swiss heritage has strongly influenced my approach to design. The landscapes of the Alps, forests and natural materials have shaped my aesthetic — combining clean, contemporary lines with a deep respect for timber as a living material. I aim to create furniture that sits comfortably within modern homes while retaining a connection to the natural world.

I’m drawn to contemporary forms and often incorporate subtle contrasts to highlight the figure and character of each wood species. At the same time, I rely on traditional joinery techniques and time-honoured woodworking methods to ensure every piece is structurally sound and built to last.

From freestanding furniture to fitted cabinetry, I take on a range of domestic and selected commercial commissions throughout Devon. If you’re considering commissioning a bespoke piece, I’d be pleased to discuss your ideas and explore what’s possible for your space. You can learn more about the commissioning process or get in touch to start the conversation.
