Bespoke Furniture & Cabinet Maker in Devon

I design and build bespoke furniture and built-in cabinetry from my workshop in Ottery St Mary, serving clients across Devon and the South West. Each piece I create is commissioned and made to suit its space precisely — whether freestanding or built in.

My work ranges from one-off cabinets and wardrobes to fitted storage, shelving and statement furniture pieces. Every project begins with a conversation about how you use your space, the materials you’re drawn to, and the character you want the finished piece to have.

I work primarily with solid hardwoods and traditional joinery techniques, ensuring that what I build is not only visually considered, but structurally sound and made to last. The result is furniture that feels intentional, balanced and truly part of the home it’s created for. You can view recent bespoke commissions in my gallery.

The Bespoke Furniture Design Process

Designing bespoke furniture is about creating a piece that feels entirely at home in its setting — both practically and aesthetically. Every commission begins with a conversation, where I take the time to understand how you use the space, what inspires you, and how the finished piece should function. Whether you arrive with a clear vision or simply an idea that needs shaping, I guide you through the process with considered advice on materials, finishes and proportion. My aim is to translate your thoughts into a design that is both purposeful and beautifully resolved.

I charge a one-off design fee, which allows us to refine the concept properly before moving into production. Iteration is encouraged — adjustments and refinements are part of ensuring the final design feels exactly right.

Depending on location and preference, we may work together through a combination of phone calls, video meetings, email exchanges, and where possible, face-to-face consultations. I provide a mixture of hand sketches and scaled CAD drawings, giving you clarity and confidence before the build begins.

Craftsmanship & Construction

Quality craftsmanship sits at the centre of every piece I build. Once the design is finalised, I carefully select the timber from my local mill, choosing boards for their character, figure and structural integrity to suit the design precisely.

Each piece is handcrafted in my Ottery St Mary workshop using traditional joinery techniques and considered construction methods. Attention to detail at this stage ensures the finished furniture is not only visually refined, but built for longevity.

From the moment materials are sourced through to final assembly, I keep you informed. I provide regular progress updates and photographs throughout the build, allowing you to follow the journey of your commission from raw timber to finished piece. There is a reason for choosing something handcrafted, and I believe the process should feel just as considered as the result.

Installation & Completion

Commissioning bespoke furniture is an investment, and the final stage deserves the same care and attention as the build itself.

Before production begins, we agree a clear plan for delivery or installation so expectations are set from the outset. For freestanding pieces, I prefer to deliver and position the furniture personally wherever possible, ensuring it arrives and is placed exactly as intended.

For fitted and built-in work, I schedule installation carefully to suit your home and minimise disruption. Each piece is installed with precision, ensuring it integrates seamlessly with the surrounding space.

Completion isn’t simply about fitting the piece — it’s about ensuring everything feels resolved, balanced and ready to live with for years to come.
